Warm Fuzzy September 2014

Former Underdog Yowzer was originally found by a Good Samaritan walking the streets of Milwaukee on a cold,  windy night. Shane, the man who found him, brought him to Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission(MADACC) and checked up on him often to make sure he was doing well at the shelter. Underdog’s director, Lauren Wojtasiak, saw the older yellow lab on the MADACC website and was drawn to him. He was soon transferred to Underdog for a chance at finding a new home.

The poor guy was a bit of a mess. He had a mass on his eyelid that was causing him discomfort, he needed to be neutered, and he seemed to be a bit arthritic. Underdog worked with their veterinarian (Dr. Carrie Donahue DVM of Full Circle Holistic Veterinary) to get Yowzer back on his feet. After his medical care and some extra love, he was posted for adoption, and soon received an application from a local woman who fell in love with him.

Yowzer, now called Ben, lives a fantastic life, getting everything he needs and more, all while making new friends during walks in his neighborhood. These happy situations happen every week at Underdog, where about 100-150 formerly homeless dogs, cats, and other critters find loving adoptive homes each year.

Underdog’s mission is to find permanent homes for animals in need, and to enrich lives by strengthening the connection between animals and people through community outreach. The organization is an all-breed, foster home-based 501c3 nonprofit business. Underdog Pet Rescue of Wisconsin has an outreach office located at 231 S Fair Oaks Ave in Madison, and hosts adoption and volunteer hours each Sunday from noon-4pm and Thursday evenings from 6:30-8:30pm. You can find adoptable pets on their website, www.underdogpetrescue.org. If you have questions or are interested in fostering or volunteering, please contact Lauren at info@underdogpetrescue.org.
