Warm Fuzzy Salute

Dane County Humane Society is proud to announce that we are establishing a High Volume High Quality Cat Spay-Neuter Clinic. Thanks to a generous donor, we have been granted use of a beautiful facility on Main Street in
Mt Horeb, Wisconsin. The DCHS Mt Horeb Clinic will provide low-cost cat sterilization surgeries to low-income individuals, as well as serving as a spay/neuter site for partner rescue and shelter facilities in Southern Wisconsin. Dane County Humane Society (DCHS), a private, 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, was incorporated in 1921 and is one of the nation’s oldest animal welfare organizations. Our new clinic will help to expand DCHS’s goals of working toward ending pet overpopulation, promoting responsible pet ownership and create lasting social change in the community.

Currently, DCHS completes Spay Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP) surgeries for families in need of low income assistance with sterilization surgeries at our main shelter location of 5132 Voges Road, just outside of the city of Madison in our Animal Medical Services space with the assistance of volunteer veterinarians, technicians and twelve volunteers. We also currently operate a Shelter Outreach Services (SOS) program that is designed to help other shelter and rescue groups meet their spay/neuter needs. For several years, SOS has operated as a mobile program, sending a veterinarian, a veterinary technician, and all the necessary equipment to outfit and execute a high quality high volume spay and neuter clinic offsite to surrounding counties in Wisconsin. The participating groups provide a location, volunteers, and patients.

With the new opportunity of having a facility completely dedicated to spay and neuter surgeries and the development of a transportation system for area rescues, shelters and low income owners, DCHS will be able to centralize our SNAP Services allowing us to expand and enhance reach towards ending pet overpopulation and owner education. Our clinic’s design and operations are based on national models presented by organizations such as U.C. Davis, Humane Alliance and ASPCA. We are anticipating opening the clinic in Mid-February to early March 2013.

Our services will provide low-income members of the community with a reduced-cost spay/neuter surgery for their companion or free-roaming/feral cat, in efforts to reduce the population of cats that are taken in by shelters daily. We are not looking to replace the need for pet owners to establish a relationship with a primary veterinarian. In fact we are eager to establish partnerships with local veterinary clinics to see our clinic clientele for postoperative checkups and future wellness care, so that we may serve as a means of stressing the importance of routine veterinary relationships with the clients we serve.
