Mounds Warm Fuzzy September 2013

As animal lovers, Mounds Pet Food Warehouse, Dane County Humane Society, and  Henry Vilas Zoo have found ways to work together to support creatures great and small. This amazing three-way partnership is unique to Dane County and works because all three organizations focus on providing the best animal care, conservation, and education for everything from tigers to tabbies. These three organizations also provide ways for you to make a difference in the lives of all animals living in Dane County.

Did you know that in addition to carrying a wide range of food, toys and training materials for your pet’s needs, Mounds Pet Food
Warehouse also collects donations for the Henry Vilas Zoo and Dane County Humane Society? The Mounds East, Fitchburg, Sun
Prairie, and Middleton locations have zoo and shelter approved toys on hand that you can purchase for your favorite zoo or shelter animal! These donations help provide mental and physical stimulation for animal residents. With Mounds support, both the zoo and DCHS have received thousands of donated items! This year, Mounds staff and the community raised $20,000 for the Henry Vilas Zoo’s Animal Welfare Fund, and $25,000 for DCHS. These generous donations will significantly improve the lives of animals at both organizations.

Knock, knock. Who’s there? Baboon.
Yes, Dane County Humane Society actually had a baboon surrendered to it. How do you take care of a baboon? DCHS reached out to the Henry Vilas Zoo and zoo staff advised DCHS about its proper care and management. Mounds contributed enrichment toys, and the baboon enjoyed a happy stay at the shelter until DCHS staff found a permanent home for him at a sanctuary in Texas. Henry Vilas Zoo, Mounds and DCHS have also collaborated to care for pacus (large tropical fish), alligators, and a host of other
animals.

When Dane County Four Lakes Wildlife Center rehabilitated a young native hummingbird and opossum which could not be released to the wild, the Zoo provided homes for these animals. Zoo staff is passionate about conservation in its backyard and around the world; the zoo hosted Four Lakes Wildlife Center staff at its International Migratory Bird Day events to celebrate our native neighbors and share the rehabilitation work that they do with the community. Last year Four Lakes saw over 5000 wild animals! If you are interested in attracting and feeding your feathered neighbors, Mounds carries a large variety of bird seed, suet, bird feeders and bath, and has a trained staff that can answer your questions about what would work best for your situation. In addition, both the Zoo and DCHS are focused on educating the next generation of young animal lovers, bringing their campers together at the Zoo this summer to share insights from both staffs.

Mounds Pet Food Warehouse, Dane County Humane Society, and Henry Vilas Zoo work hard to cover the needs of the spectrum
of animals in our community, from mice to rhinoceroses. With this wealth of expertise, the synergy of collaboration with each other, and an incredibly supportive community, we are excited for the great strides in animal well-being that the future will bring.

Thank you, Madison community, for supporting us and making a difference in the lives of thousands of animals!
