Mounds is committed to reducing pet overpopulation; therefore, we do not sell companion animals. Instead, Mounds partners with local humane societies and rescue organizations that offer temporary homes to homeless animals. In addition to the Mounds Humane Society Satellite Adoption Centers, each store hosts various rescue organizations’ adoption and micro chipping events throughout the year. And, as many animals are surrendered to shelters due to behavioral issues, Mounds offers referrals to local kennel clubs and dog training classes.
The Mounds website features a wealth of information to benefit pets and guardians alike: Pet tips, upcoming events, links to rescue groups, educational resources and other pet service providers. Mounds publishes a monthly newsletter that includes features such as, the Mounds Employee of the Month, a Warm Fuzzy Salute to volunteers in the community, Ask the Vet and Dog Power, Purr Fect Cat or Horse Power Success Stories. Our annual Dog Fest, showcasing humane societies, rescue groups, adoptable dogs, pet food vendors and dog friendly services has been a perennial favorite in Madison and surrounding communities.
Our customers, both human and animal, are important to us – feel free to bring your dog along when you shop at Mounds. Dogs may shop with their human companions as long as they are on a six foot or shorter non-retractable leash. Upon check-out, human companions receive a free Mounds candy bar. Dogs receive a free treat for every tail wag–well, maybe just for the first two!
History of Mounds Pet Food Warehouse, Inc.
Ken Mack, a 1963 University of Wisconsin graduate, began his professional career as a District General Manager for the Ralston Purina Company. It was during his ten-year tenure with Ralston Purina that Ken founded Mounds Agri Service, a livestock company, in Blue Mounds, Wisconsin.
By 1974 Mounds Agri Service was growing so rapidly that Ken left Purina to focus on his own company. He moved the business to an old warehouse he rented in downtown Middleton. By1976 Mounds Agri Service had outgrown the old warehouse, so Ken purchased a vacant lot on Highway 14 and began a steady program of building the mill facilities that exist today as Randan Agri Service.
Mounds Agri Service was originally a farm store, built to accommodate farm customers. Its primary business was the manufacture of farm feeds and fertilizers, with some pet food offerings. However, by 1984 the farm store was devoted entirely to pet food and supplies. Ken began selling private label products: Dog Power, Purrfect Cat, Horse Power and the various wild birdseeds. These products helped the company stay competitive and profitable when larger national chain pet supply stores came to the Madison area.
In 1991 Ken located another pet food and supplies store on South Stoughton Road on Madison’s east side. This store grew so rapidly that in 1993 a 15,000 sq. ft. Mounds Pet Food Warehouse was built at its present location on Stoughton Road. New Mounds Pet Food Warehouses followed: Middleton (1994), Janesville (1996) and Fitchburg (1997). In 1999, determined to keep Mounds privately held and locally owned, Ken sold a portion of the business to Mounds management staff members Mary Jansma and Tim Walton. Ken Mack passed away on March 15, 2000. Mary Jansma passed away on January 9, 2014. Tim Walton is now President of Mounds. Mounds Sun Prairie opened on July 20, 2006.
Now a five-store operation Mounds is known for its community involvement. Mounds hosts several pet-related events each year and supports area humane societies, dog clubs and service animal groups. Tim remains committed to Mounds’ employees, customers, their pets and the community at large. Mounds employees are provided with thorough customer service and product knowledge training programs. This allows Mounds employees to offer a level of customer service that creates loyal, satisfied customers who return to Mounds again and again.
